As most of you know, Houston, has had devastating floods this year. Cypress Creek is really a river but with our mix of drought and flood it can go from a trickle to a torrent. It runs from Waller County in north west of the Houston area, through the Mercer Arboretum and then into Lake Houston. The Arboretum had only just repaired acres of woods that had been destroyed in our 10 year drought when the creek completely burst it’s banks flooding most of the new work. The volunteers must have been devastated. As soon as it opened again, we went to see what was left and we were surprised that some areas were still beautifully planted even though half of the park was closed.
In the next few posts, I will show their new color palette. This is a link to my previous post magenta and yellow palette.
Love the stone work!

It’s probably local stone but the pond has been there for a long time. Thank you!

It takes a special talent to aline stonework. I can do it, but not fast enough to di it for a living.

Another borderline obsession of mine are walls. Dry stone walling is something I REALLY want to learn …

Its simply trial and error. The pros are just faster!

Much of the north of Scotland is covered in amazing walls or dykes that have lasted for centuries. A short distance from my home was an old Roman wall – now only a few feet high. I spent endless hours sitting making up stories about the Romans.

That’s just it …. It’s the stories that are captive in those walls … The amazing effort and skill and the reasons why men built them. Scotland is without question one of the most beautiful places on earth … But you know that 😉

It’s curious, Osyth, I have been all over Scotland and love the history/landscapes but it doesn’t really feel like home. I found some fascinating genealogical information in Salt Lake City that will have to be a series. I am more Celtic than I thought…

We need to discuss this further …. For me, Britain simply never felt like home …. I did better in the West of Ireland but the moment I moved to France I felt home. I can’t explain it. I very much look forward to your Celtic revelations ☺️

Thank you so much – this time the worst of the flooding has hit Louisiana. I now feel dread when I hear the thunderstorms.

I am sure you do. Terrible what has happened in Louisiana. Be safe.

Thank you. The truth is that in TX and LA we have built too many homes close to natural watersheds and that makes the flooding much worse. We need more swamps, bayous and at least stilt houses. We deliberately bought the highest house in our street…

That was smart. How would more swamps help? This city kid doesn’t understand.

The swamps soak up the regular large rain storms that we get in this area, including hurricanes and can protect the coastline. The Florida Everglades do something similar.

Interesting. That makes a lot of sense. Thanks for educating this city boy.

I really enjoy visiting Arboretums, I glad to hear some of the areas there continue to be blooming and doing well.

Some of the original trees must have missed the worst of the flooding (and most trees here can cope with flood and drought) but they must have planted new beds. More to come!
