There was a huge clatter on the chimney after a thunderstorm. Teddy and I looked at each other – WTH is that? Sometimes a mockingbird sings noisily sweetly or a mourning dove coos down the chimney but there was silence…apart from the clatter.
Black vultures have no voice and make a strange grunting noise. This pair were just enjoying their lookout.
A lovely spooky moment as we approach Halloween!
That’s pretty cool!!!

๐ I only see wrens, robins and harriers at this time of year ๐ฆ

We don’t have of those here. I do miss wrens and robins. I don’t recall Harriers in Scotland. The Bluejay started shrieking the other day and a beautiful Cooper’s Hawk had landed on the tree in front of me.

Hawks are gorgeous aren’t they? We have regular jays here and I love them! You would have had harriers in Scotland; they are rare but there ๐ Isn’t it funny, the weird things we notice ๐

I really prefer hawks to eagles but both are magnificent. When we visited Abu Dhabi, I had the chance to hold someone’s beautiful falcon on my arm (with gauntlet). Her name was Pala.

Wow, how great! I think there is something quite majestic about a bird of prey!! ๐

I am sure they bent the top of the chimney. We would call them stoaters in Scotland. A tad heavy. ๐

They are all around here, too. You’ve seen my pictures.

Well, they make marvelous work of all the road kill, so I am always happy to see them!

Wonderful Wowzers!

Ha, ha. They really are wowzers, Marilee. I chased them once when they were too near the ducklings (they sometimes eat live stuff) and they are really big. Also not frightened of humans…๐

Reminds me: I used to live very high off the Hudson River such that raptors would soar over my home. One day I was oblivious on the patio that did not face the river. That patio was over a low hanging roof – on which a turkey vulture landed. Honest to Gawd, right by my head. I live to tell the story.

They really prefer you to be nicely decomposing…๐

Hi. How long did they stay there?

Hi Neil, they stayed for about 30 minutes, preening and whispering sweet nothings. They live here all the time and I see them in the garden and roof but not perched on my chimney!!

What a great surprise visit.

Thank you, Peggy! To be honest, they are always close by, usually soaring, but rarely on the chimney!

They look like a ball of menacing feathers. You can teach them to fly into a grocery store and get what you want. Now that will take some training lol

I wish I could have used them to vote yesterday. We were all jam packed in a small room…anyone would think there wasn’t a pandemic! BTW, they are really quite lovely. They were preening each other on the chimney. ๐

Whoa! Yeah. Vultures on the chimney would be a bit much for me. ๐ฌ

Ha, ha! I really like the vultures. They nest close to us and clear up the road kill.

That’s true. We have a lot around these parts too. I am a little “creeped out” by them though.

Every once in awhile turkey vultures perch on the roof. Itโs crazy…with all the trees around me. ๐๐๐

I miss our turkey vultures with their red and black outfits. They have moved to deeper forest, I think.

Every now and then I see vultures on roofs in my nieghborhood. It’s really amazing when they spread their wings to catch the sun. The wingspan of our variety is huge.

Vultures are ugly but necessary creatures. To see them perched on top of a chimney is different.

I think they are quite beautiful. We live in a forest so their nests are in the tall trees around our house. She was just visiting…
