On our recent visit to Natchitoches in Louisiana, I visited the Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. I was enchanted by a pair of angels looking over the water fonts. Roman Catholics traditionally bless themselves with holy water as they enter the church. Now they the fonts are often empty as there is a health risk from everyone using the same bowl.

These shell fonts are lovely. Do you know what the connection with the sea and shells is?

The shell is one of the symbols of baptism in the Roman Catholic Church. The dish used to pour the holy water is often scallopped shaped as well.

It is starange how places which are seen as holy to a specific religion can feel peaceful to those who just linger there for a time.

I find it particularly enjoyable on the back roads of America where few tourists visit. Mosques have a similar feel. Thank you!

It was quite lovely, Aiva. Once it was a cathedral but had been elevated to a minor basilica. I imagine it must have been it’s historical significance in the New World. K x

Nice angels. I guess fonts generally are a breeding ground for bacteria even before Covid considerations. I wonder how often the water’s replaced?
