Normally, our squirrels are fed peanuts with the occasional apple core but I looked in the fridge and all four of my avocados had gone brown. I salvaged as much of the good green stuff as I could, made some guacamole, then out of curiosity, put the remains in a baking tray with a couple of fresh dates. It was hilarious watching the squirrels approach the ‘scary green fruit’ with trepidation. Once they had tasted it, however, a whole new species joined the avocado lovers of the world. The little one in the video above ran off with a skin that was bigger than her head.
Fresh dates are another delicacy rarely seen round these parts unless there are equally crazy squirrel lovers in our cul-de-sac. I love the way squirrels inflate their tails when anxious, just like cats! After tasting avocado, in this second video above, the wee squirrel girl found a date! She could hardly fit it in her mouth but was determined to steal her prize. Then she went up in a tree and alternated between one nibble of the date, followed by one bark, another nibble and a bark until it was finished. What was she communicating? “Stay away from me and this ambrosia!” or “I can’t believe how good this tastes!”
We had hoped to see more night critters but the day critters ate most of the buffet… This sweet little possum above didn’t disappoint with very noisy smacking of lips. I have no idea why possums have terrible table manners. A skunk visited too and I was surprised that she was very interested in the avocado. Usually they stick to bugs and worms.
Our perceptions change when our perceptions are challenged. Interesting video. Since we have no skunks on our island they are SOL for any delicacy.

Happy Easter, Joseph! We didn’t know how much we loved squirrels until we started watching them closely.

When I was in university and the one professor I had was a snore with his monotone voice that felt like lead on your shoulders. Well I amused myself by looking at the squirrels chasing each other up and down the trees. Yes, I did pass the course lol.

LOL! Most of my professors were monotonous, but there were no squirrels to look…just pigeons!

You’ve reminded me of something: When I was a kid my favorite baseball player was Duke Snider. He was the Dodgers’ centerfielder. He also was an avocado farmer!

Perhaps I will name one of my wee squirrel boys, Duke, in his honor?

The squirrels might be hipsters and just bewildered why the Avocado is not paired with artisanal toast. Happy Easter! LOL!

Bwa ha ha!! Next time I will pair it with artisanal toast with a sesame topping. We live in the woods in East Texas so no hipsters, not even the squirrels…😁

I love their timid approach then feast with gusto. 🙂

It’s hilarious, isn’t it? Perhaps they were more frightened by the metal tray. They always walk in a zig zag pattern to avoid the many predators.

Probably worried about the metal tray on their fillings 😂

This is so cool. I wish you had gotten the squirrel bark. That would have been fun to hear.

It is actually really annoying! It sounds like a yappy wee dog when the squirrels are distressed but they sometimes make it more mournful and elongated. I will try to record it sometime, Thank you!

LOL! Are you sure? I was woken at 3 am last week by a distraught fawn who could not find her mommy deer…they are very loud!! Both were in the reserve behind the fence and reunited after I searched with a flashlight.

Thank you so much! You would have loved the thousands of stinging caterpillars on our trip to the Texas Hill Country last week…😊

That’s lovely and in tune with the natural world – the strongest take the lion’s share. leaving some for others. Yet we stronger humans shamelessly exploit other animals for food.

These are some great video captures, Kerry. Really liked how the squirrel sniffed out the avocado and ran away with some of it. It must have noticed that avocados are not usually on the menu – not their usual apples. Looked like you served up a hit 😀
